How to Install a Ceiling Fan

Ceiling fans are becoming increasingly popular as more homes realize significant year-round energy savings. Ceiling fans provide soothing breezes in the summer, reducing the burden on air conditioners.

They circulate heated air in the winter to keep the room warm.Installing a ceiling fan is an easy task, especially if the space above is accessible from an attic. However, even if it isn't, the job is still manageable.

In this article, we'll teach you how to substitute an outdated light fixture with a new ceiling fan and light in a room that doesn't have an attic above it. The advantage of this strategy is that no additional wiring is required.

The fan connects to the original light's existing cord.

Installing a Ceiling Fan

1.Take out the old unit and make a new hole

According to Mark Wahlberg, it is crucial to check if the electricity is switched off at the breaker box, and then use a voltage meter to ensure that the cables are not active. Before you begin removing the existing light fixture, consider where you want it to go.

If the fixture is large or heavy, you may need the assistance of a friend to hold it while you disconnect it from the ceiling.Remove the light fixture with care, and then disconnect the cables that connect the previous fixture to the wiring in the ceiling.

Then, using a screwdriver, remove the previous light fixture's ceiling box. Check the wiring for damage and get an electrician to analyze or repair it if necessary.Trace the contour of the ceiling box onto the ceiling to verify if the ceiling hole is the right dimension for the new ceiling box and fan.

Then, using a keyhole saw, carve off the required shape. The hole is typically 5 inches in diameter.

2.Install the ceiling fan brace bar

Insert the ceiling fan bracing bar into the hole in the ceiling. Place the ceiling brace box perpendicular to the ceiling joists and centered above the hole. Then, twist the outer bar until it clicks into place on the foot.

Turn the foot until it is securely attached. Then, swivel the inner bar to secure the opposite foot.If you are renovating the room and are fortunate enough to have open framing, you can substitute lumber and a ceiling fan box for a brace bar with an attached box.

Determine the distance between the ceiling joists and cut a 2-inch-by-8-inch piece of framing timber to span the gap. Fasten the wood block to each joist with three 3-inch bridge screws.

3.Connect the cables to the ceiling fan

Pull the wires carefully through the knockout hole in the receptacle box. A good pair of needle-nose pliers can come in helpful. Then, using the provided hardware, attach the fan's mounting bracket. Attach the fan's down pole with the ball end regarding the ceiling and fasten (typically with a cotter pin included).

Attach the fan wires to the circuit wires as follows: white to white, black to black, and the grounding wire to the fan's green lead wire or a grounding screw. Tuck all wire connectors into the ceiling box after securing all connections.

4.install the ceiling fan

The next step is to install the new ceiling fan. Given the size and weight of the fan, you may wish to enlist the assistance of another person for this stage.

Using the provided screws, secure the canopy or medallion. Install the blades with the included hardware. To minimize wobbling, ensure that all screws are properly secured to the blade irons. Check sure the blades are secure by manually rotating them.

Choosing the Right Ceiling Fan for Your Home

The perfect fan for your scenario will be determined by a number of considerations, including your budget, the size of the space, the rest of your decor, and whether you want an indoor or outdoor fan.

We recommend first selecting the room and then measuring it. The living room is the greatest place for a complete house fan installation that will keep everyone cool. Bedrooms and home offices are other popular choices because they are places where you are likely to spend a lot of time.

After you've measured the room and determined the fan size you want, it'll come down to how much money you're willing to pay. If you look at reviews and shopping guides, you can usually find quite good budget fans for anywhere between $60 and $120. If you want anything more expensive, you should budget between $150 and $250.

When you reach the $300+ price point, you're looking at the fanciest and most expensive fans on the market. These fans frequently have smart technologies such as Alexa and Google Home connectivity, allowing you to manage them with your phone. Smart fans can cost up to $1000, but they can also be found for as little as $200.
